RE: Powering your laptop

I use a small 500w inverter from Frys. It runs my laptop, spec A, and misc test gear all day long. The trick is to not plug into the cig lighter. The cig lighter can only provide so much power. I bought a 3 to 1 cig lighter adapter from Radio Shack. It comes with an extra harness to hardwire in to the car (It removes the cig plug and leaves two wires). Run the hot to the battery with an appropriately sized wire ( I used 8g because I had it).

RE: Mounting LCD TV in an RV using a wall mount

I did pretty much the same thing as Chief did for the bedroom TV. The only thing I did different was to bolt the mount to the inside of the cabinet and hang the LCD like a cabinet door. The DVD player peeks out below. The rest of the cabinet gets used for cell phone/ ipod chargers, wallet, etc. I keep planning on modifying the mount with with a know so it could still swivel and still lock in place, but I never seem to get around to it. By the way, dont buy the mounts at Best Buy or any other box store- they are way overpriced. I bought mine from partexpress.com. The mounts are fairly universal once you get in the right size/ weight range- ie dont try and hang a 50 inch plasma on a 14 inch LCD mount.

RE: Hand Held Radio

Just get your Amateur license. More radio choices and its not hard since the morse requirement was dropped. I believe 30 mile range is a dream...

RE: LCD TV and Satellite box mounting option

I'm not at home where I can check this, but I THINK my DirecTV box has screw hole slots on the bottom so you can mount it on the wall. I would think you could mount the box on the wall, and the LCD on a new arm and everything would work properly. The IR signal from the remote doesn't normally have to hit the sat box straight on. Many of the newer boxes are RF ready. You just have to turn it on in the options... The remote should be ready too. Get a long HDMI cable and throw it in a cabinet...

RE: WW Pin Box Bolts Issue - WOW!!!

I read somewhere recently that grade 5 may be better in a shearing application because they tend to bend before breaking whereas grade 8s will sheer off. Not sure how true it is, but it may be worth looking into. I know I will check my bolts!

RE: Raising the head of the bed

I saw someone ( on here I think) that built a simple riser that added height and storage to his flip up bed. I think they even angled it too. It would be really easy to just use the same type construction the bed is on now, but higher and angled, fitted inside the original. Move the hinge and supports to the new piece and you are all set. If you are clever how its attached, you could remove it if you sell the trailer and leave no trace behind...

RE: Air compressor line

PVC is dangerous as an air line. I would never use it especially in something that could be exposed to extremes of hot or cold. The PVC can and will shatter and send shards everywhere. Many industrial hose places ( technical term- we have HOSE MAN in S Calif), have a rubber product with push on fittings good for 300psi. Way easy to use and much safer than PVC. I believe its the same type of DOT hose used on trucks...

RE: Anyone buying Diesel in Mexico?

One itsy bitsy thing to do; make sure your "aux" tank is physically connected to your main tank. Many truck bed mounted tanks are NOT connected, to the main tank. They are classed as "transfer tanks". There is a post about going to Mex for diesel on Glamisdunes.com. Two people were pulled into secondary inspection this weekend. After taking all their info, they were told all tanks have to be plumbed into the fuel system or its no longer legal. The BP guy even checked ones vehicle to make sure it was plumbed. Sounds like someone wants to make sure they get their fuel tax $$...

RE: White lubricant

Are you talking about white lithium grease? It comes in tubes, cans, or spray- I use it on my 5er hitch. The better choice ( I think) for hinges, locks, etc is dry spray silicone. You can find it near the garage door stuff at Home Depot. Dries clear, doesnt attract dirt and dust like grease, graphite and WD40...

RE: Landing Gear on a Raptor

On my trailer, there was an inline fuse. It was covered by the plastic loom. I would never have found it! Good thing I was rewiring it before I had an issue... JFJ, glad you fixed it!

RE: Can anyone identify this antanne?

Those are 800Mhz antennas for a commercial radio. You see them on buses alot- they are hard to break! http://www.tessco.com/products/displayProductInfo.do?sku=35012&eventPage=1

RE: NAS device recommendations?

As much as I hate to say it, Microsoft has been getting some good reviews with their Windows Home Server. From Wikipedia... File corruption Windows Home Server suffers from a File Corruption flaw whereby files saved directly to or edited on shares on a WHS device may become corrupted. Only the files that have NTFS Alternate Data Streams are susceptible to the flaw. The flaw leads to data corruption only when the server is under heavy load at the time when the file (with ADS) is being saved onto a share. Backups made by Windows Home Server are not susceptible to the flaw. Even though the issue was first acknowledged in October 2007, Microsoft formally warned users of the seriousness of the flaw on December 20, 2007. Microsoft has issued a list of applications, including Windows Live Photo Gallery, Microsoft OneNote, Microsoft Outlook and SyncToy 2.0, which might trigger the flaw if they are used to edit the files on a WHS share directly. Ha, hadnt seen that one. Sounds like as long as you dont mess with whats on the server you are ok. I dont use any of those programs anyways.

RE: NAS device recommendations?

As much as I hate to say it, Microsoft has been getting some good reviews with their Windows Home Server. It is available as software only or already on a PC. I got the free trial from them, but havent had time to mess with it yet. The feature that I wanted to try is the ability to serve virus protection to all the clients- saves me from messing with 3 kids computer plus mine all the time. One of these days I have to mess with it... Currently I run gigabit connections from a couple computers, 100m connections from the others to a server in the garage running XP, a RAID5 card ( EBAY $60), and 2 TB of hard drives ( FRYS is your friend). Works pretty good. The kids use it for Itunes and I use it for backups, digital pictures, and movies. Works ok, but its XP- it goes stupid and has to be reset once in a while. Google DIY NAS and there are a few good articles out there. I tried one with Linux Ubunto, but didnt have the patience to stick with it.

RE: 6v Battery setup help

Here's a pic of my setup.............. http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o156/JRBurn/Batteries.jpg JR! You found a battery box that will fit 4 6's in the WW. Please give me a link where you got it please. and thanks I think those are just run of the mill plastic bins from Office Depot with the lids removed. The other post with the Allied fisheries link has boxes, but they still wouldnt fit in my WW. I moved the propane tanks over and rotated them 90 degrees, then made a new shelf for 4 batts without a box.

RE: who has remote start with 6.0 PSD or ANY diesel?

I had a remote start on my older F150, loved it. The only reason I havent put one on the F350 yet is I want one that disarms the alarm with the door keypad too. My old one had it but they dont make that alarm anymore...

RE: WW recall notice for exterior lighting?

If this is something that you are not going to have WW fix, I wonder if the DMV will hold next year registration. I hope not... I wont be spending $300 is gas for $20 in stick on reflectors and side markers. I wanted to add more lights anyways. One of the other posts commented on the requirement for 3 center lights in the rear and a side marker. My 07 LE already has those... Wonder what WW is adding...
